Former Maldives President Nasheed Awaits Arrest

Mohamed Nasheed, former president of the Maldives, is awaiting arrest in Male, the capital of the tiny island nation, according to the nation's former foreign minister.

Mr. Nasheed was deposed in a coup Tuesday and the nation has shown signs of turmoil since then. Former foreign minister Ahmed Naseem, in a telephone interview, said Thursday he was with Mr. Nasheed and it was his understanding that security forces are "on the way to arrest him." Mr. Naseem said it was unclear on what basis the arrest warrant for the former president was issued.

Mr. Naseem said he expects other members of the former government, including Cabinet ministers, also to be arrested later Thursday. Mr. Naseem said that Mr. Nasheed's wife was in Sri Lanka but that other family members remained with Mr. Nasheed in Male. He added that Mr. Nasheed also intended to stay in Male. "He will not leave," he said.
